What is a Sleep Test?

Polysomnogram (PSG). A polysomnogram is an overnight sleep study that records brain activity, eye movements, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, body movement, and more. Polysomnograms are used to help diagnose some of the following:

  • Sleep related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • Sleep related seizure disorders.
  • Sleep related movement disorders such as periodic limb movement disorder.
  • Sleep related disorders caused by excessive daytime sleepiness.

Importance of Sleep Testing

  • Definition of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) • OSA is a serious, potentially life-altering breathing disorder that occurs during sleep, and that may lead to life-threatening conditions.
  • The upper airway repeatedly collapses, causing cessation of breathing (apnea) or inadequate breathing (hypopnea) and sleep fragmentation.
  • Sleep fragmentation results in chronic daytime sleepiness.

DANGERS OF UNTREATED SLEEP APNEA

  • Potential consequences if OSA is left untreated
  • Decreased quality of life
  • OSA patients, prior to diagnosis and treatment, consume 2.5 times more health care resources than patients without OSA.
  • Hypertension
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Stroke
  • Increased risk of motor vehicle and work-related accidents due to sleepiness

SEE YOUR PHYSICIAN

Let your doctor know if you suffer from any or all of these symptoms.  Untreated sleep apnea can lead to many other health issues including heart disease, respiratory failure and stroke as well as injury due to falling asleep driving or operating machinery.    A definitive diagnosis of sleep apnea can be made only with a sleep study conducted during a visit to a sleep lab, usually overnight.   A sleep study generates records of activity during several hours of sleep.   A substantial amount of data is generated by a sleep study,   If you are diagnosed with OSA you and your sleep specialist will then have the tools needed to explore your treatment options.
